how does you tile a texture so it doesnt look like a chess board?

Hello Tim,
If you are using a 'bump' texture, you can change the height and width by double clicking the model to open the 'material' window.
From here select 'textures'.
Select the 'bump' texture and scroll down to 'size and mapping'.
Here you should see the 'Use DPI for size' checkbox is marked.
Uncheck the box to be able to modify the width and height of your texture.
You can also do this by changing the 'Size' dpi directly.
